Saint Tropez is a little fishing port brought out of anonymity by Paul Signac, who discovered the village in 1892. Blown away by its natural light, he decided to stay. He would quickly be joined by his friends, all amazed by the light, Matisse, Marquet, Derain, Bonnard, then several prestigious authors, Maupassant, Colette, Eluard, Sagan etc. However, it was cinema that truly turned Saint Tropez into a legend, with, amongst others, the police saga played by Louis de Funes znd Michel Galabru and, of course, the iconic Brigitte Bardot, who is sublime in ‘And God created woman’.

However, to discover the real Saint Tropez – the one sought after by painters and stars from the 1960s – you need to get away from the summer crowds.

In April, May, June, September and October, there’s no more showing off, as the ‘myth’ becomes the little fishing village of former times, revealing itself to be authentic, charming and pleasant. As you wander, you will discover its colourful streets, flowery alleyways, squares, markets and museums. You can climb up to La Citadelle, before descending into a maritime cemetery, and survey the port, where you can relax on a café terrace.
