Le Thoronet

The story of Le Thoronet is intrinsically linked to that of its Abbey – a masterpiece of Provençal Romanesque architecture, whose prosperity led to the development of the surrounding village. The village's subsoil was mined for its Bauxite in the 20th century. The river Argens runs through 26 km of Le Thoronet, and offers a succession of exceptional sites that nature lovers can enjoy discovering by canoe.

Abbaye du Thoronet
An artistic and architectural treasure, this Cistercian abbey is one of the purest and most moving examples of Romanesque architecture in Provence. more +
Eglise Sainte Marie
Built in 1704, this church was reworked several times in the 19th century. The facade comprises two square towers – one topped with a bell tower - pierced with murder holes. The door was carved by local sculptor Marius Mullercke, and represents a miner and wine grower – the village's main activities in the 20th century.
Canal de Sainte-Croix
The canal de Sainte-Croix is a little marvel of freshness, routing water from the river Argens to the towns of Le Thoronet and Lorgues.

It was built between 1843 and 1846 under the reign of Charles X.

It is the Var's longest canal, stretching 30 km from the hamlet of Sainte-Croix to Pont d'Argens bridge, where it splits into two waterways.

The left waterway winds its way through Lorgues before flowing into the river at Plan de la Vache. The right waterway flows through the countryside of Le Thoronet to the hamlet of Les Mauniers more +
