Corniche de l'Estérel

Where the red rocks of the Massif de l'Estérel tumble into blue Mediterranean waters Nicknamed the "Corniche d'Or" (Golden Corniche), the beautiful coast road running along the foot of the Massif de l'Estérel offers many unforgettable sights, such as Dramont quarry, where porphyry (a blueish volcanic rock belonging to the basalt family) was mined in days gone by, and Ile d'Or island anchored just off the coast, home to a bizarre tower erected in the 19th century by an eccentric who claimed to be the king of the island! But the most spectacular section of the coast is undoubtedly Cape Roux, where red porphyry rock tumbles down into the sea from a height of 452 metres. The cliff continues underwater, and the sea reaches depths of 1000 m less than 5 km off the coast. Just for fun, you may be interested to know that the Ile d'Or inspired the cover of one of the Tintin comics by Hergé. Any idea which one?
