Besse-sur-Issole

This is the home town of the famous smuggler Gaspard de Besse, whose exploits marked the history of the Var in the 18th century. A big-hearted bandit, Gaspard, like Robin Hood, stole from the rich to give to the poor! Besse is bordered by the beautiful Maures forest, which was the decor for Gaspard's many adventures and is now a favourite haunt for walking and nature lovers. The village's maze of winding streets spread out under its ancient castle. With its neighbouring little lake set in the plain, Bresse is the perfect choice for an agreeable afternoon stroll.

Lac de Besse-sur-Issole
This natural lake fed by the river Issole laps the doorstep of a small village. A protected site, spanning 10 acres, it includes bathing and picnic areas and is home to many ducks!
In the footsteps of Gaspard de Bresse
The legendary bandit Gaspard de Besse was born here in 1757. During his childhood years, he spent many hours fishing tench and pike on the village's pretty, circular lake, fed by the river Issole.

Gaspard's family home is situated on the right of Rue de Barrème. On Place de l’Horloge, you can see the tower he climbed in secret when he was 10 years old.
