The Var is divided into eight territories, all flying the flag, on a local level, for the sustained development policy implemented by the Var Regional Council (Conseil Général du Var). This policy is designed to help the Var control its economic growth, and promote its natural assets and environmental heritage. Tourism is one of the major focuses of the Var's sustained development policy. The Var Regional Council set up a Tourism Development Plan in 2006, comprising a series of measures for the Var's 8 territories. The richly diverse history and environmental heritage of each territory make the Var a major tourist attraction.
